March 2011
A Grand and Wonferful Adventure!

After twelve years at the head of the organization, Francine Décary announced in September that she would be stepping down as President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma-Québec effective March 31, 2011. This issue of the Info Héma-Québec bulletin pays tribute to Dr. Décary and underlines the vital contribution she has made to the cause of blood donation. As she leaves, we welcome Dr. Jean De Serres, whom we present in the leading article.

The 2011 edition of the Info Héma-Québec bulletin informs readers about recent activities of Héma-Québec, including its campaign to raise awareness about blood donation among cultural communities, the introduction of a process to reintegrate certain donors, and the efforts to cultivate a Héma-Québec presence in social media.

You will also learn about the creation of an important organ and tissue donation consent registry that will make it easier for Héma-Québec to fulfill its mission in the realm of human tissue grafts.

Cultural communities: a major challenge

The 2010 edition of the Info Héma-Québec bulletin raises reader awareness of the importance of recruiting blood and stem cell donors from the various cultural communities that make up Québec today. The chances of matching the blood of a donor and a recipient are, in fact, greater if both come from the same ethnic group.

The bulletin also provides information about the Stem Cell Donor Registry, the various components in the gift of life, the importance of organ and tissue donations, and the highlights of the 2009-2010 year.

June 2008
National Blood Donor Week

Contributions from donors, volunteers and partners are absolutely necessary for Héma-Québec to fulfill its mission. Some 16,000 volunteers and 280,000 donors contribute to maintaining the collective blood reserve managed by Héma-Québec for the hospitals of Québec and their patients. Providing blood products, stem cells and human tissues is a daily challenge.

This edition of InFO Héma-Québec will pay tribute to those who so generously participate in this chain of life. Our goal is to put a face on the names of men and women who work to give life, and to hear their side of it. Enjoy!

August 2007
Host of WBDD

This year, Héma-Québec had the privilege to organize, in collaboration with Health Canada and Canadian Blood Services, World Blood Donor Day. The event was in its fourth edition and this year’s theme was “Safe Blood for Safe Motherhood”. Thus, last June 14th, the organization took the opportunity to thank voluntary blood donors for their show of solidarity not only towards thousands of mothers and newborns around the world but also towards persons suffering from illnesses that require blood products.
