Héma-Québec makes its strategic planning public as part of its 2006-2007 annual report

Montréal, October 12, 2007 - Héma-Québec proudly presents both a review of its accomplishments and its strategic planning as part of the 2006-2007 Annual Report. As befitting the importance of this three-year plan, this annual report looks at highlights from this plan.

This year, the organization redefined its activities around its Vision 2005-2010, as shown by the report's title: "From Vision to Action." Each section of the annual report describes progress made on each major issue that Héma-Québec is facing.

"Offering to the Québec population a supply of blood products, human tissues and stem cells that is both adequate and safe is the issue to which we dedicate the majority of our human and material resources. This is achieved primarily through the day-to-day work of our qualified staff, supported by the outstanding commitment of all the volunteers, the blood donors and our partners who all contribute significantly to the fulfillment of our mission," stated Dr. Francine Décary, Héma-Québec's President and Chief Executive Officer.

In 2006-2007, over 300,000 donors gave blood at blood drives held throughout Québec Héma-Québec in order to meet all hospitals' needs. Of these people, 35,872 were first-time donors, a 5% increase over the previous year. All donations were tested and processed, resulting in more than 456,000 products, namely blood components such as packed red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitates.
As for human tissues, 123 donors were collected from during the last fiscal year and 364 grafts were distributed to hospitals. Moreover, since the creation of the Public Cord Blood Bank, 2,335 mothers have registered in the program. Of these mothers, 1,821 have qualified, 1,383 umbilical cords have been collected and 402 have been frozen.
Created in 1998, Héma-Québec's mission is to efficiently provide adequate quantities of
safe, optimal blood components, substitutes, human tissues and cord blood to meet the needs of all Quebecers; provide and develop expertise along with specialized and innovative services and products in the fields of transfusion medicine and human tissue transplantation.
Héma-Québec is 1,300 employees, more than 300,000 blood donors every year, 16,000 partner volunteers and 450,000 blood products delivered each year to Québec hospitals to meet patients' needs.
