Dr. Gilles Delage, recipient of the AMMI Canada Distinguished Service Award

Montréal, April 9, 2013 – On Thursday, April 4, Dr. Gilles Delage, Héma-Québec’s Vice-President of Medical Affairs – Microbiology, received the Distinguished Service Award atthe AMMI Canada (Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada) – CACMID (Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) Annual Conference, which took place in Québec City between April 4 and 6.

This award is given in recognition of an individual’s outstanding service to AMMI Canada. It was presented to Dr. Delage for his remarkable contributions to the Canadian Association of Medical Microbiologists and the Canadian Infectious Disease Society, which eventually merged to form AMMI Canada.

Dr. Delage has many noteworthy achievements to his credit in the fields of microbiology and infectiology in Québec. He was the first microbiologist in Canada to specialize in blood-borne diseases and has accomplished a great deal in terms of advocating risk management in public health – a priority he adopted during the course of his impressive career.

A specialist in medical microbiology, Dr. Delage started off as a microbiologist/infectiologist at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre, where he later created the infectious diseases consultation department. He then worked for the Canadian Red Cross Transfusion Centre, first as Medical Coordinator and then as Assistant Medical Director. Dr. Delage subsequently became the Scientific Director of the Laboratoire de santé publique du Québec before joining Héma‑Québec in 2000.

As Héma-Québec’s Vice-President of Medical Affairs – Microbiology, Dr. Delage plays a critical role within the organization. Among his key responsibilities is ensuring the safety of blood components.
