Whole blood donation: Men can give blood if they weigh at least 50 kg (110 pounds). Women between the ages of 18 and 22, click here to find out if you can give blood. Women aged 23 and over can give blood if they weigh at least 50 kg (110 pounds).

The risk of fainting when making a blood donation is higher in the case of donors under the age of 23, women, and individuals with a smaller volume of blood. For this reason, Héma-Québec implemented a criterion based on weight and size. The objective is to ensure that no more than 15% of an individual’s estimated blood volume is collected.

As a result, for female donors under the age of 23, weight and size are taken into consideration when determining their eligibility to give blood.

Since men have a larger volume of blood than women do, the weight criterion alone is enough in their case and continues to be applied to male donors.
