Organ and tissue donations: what is the difference?

Unlike organs, tissues can be retrieved up to several hours after blood circulation has ceased. This increases the opportunities for tissue donations considerably following a death.

Héma-Québec collects the following human tissue :

  • Musculoskeletal tissues (tendons, bones fragmented, femoral heads)
  • Skin tissue
  • Cardiac valves
  • Corneas (in partnership with the Eye Bank of Quebec)

Transplant Québec is responsible for the donation and management of organs.
