Some 28,500 blood donors shared a unique gift during Héma-Québec’s holiday campaign

Montréal, January 10, 2005 - Some 28,500 people gave blood during the holiday campaign of Héma-Québec, Québec's supplier of blood products. The initial objective was to welcome 33,000 donors. During the campaign held from December 2, 2004, to January 9, 2005, themed on Share a unique gift, some 175 blood drives were organized throughout Québec by hundreds of volunteers from partner organizations.

"On behalf of the recipients, Héma-Québec would like to thank everybody who came out to give blood during this period so crucial for maintaining the supply," said Dr. Francine Décary, Chief Executive Officer of Héma-Québec. "Health is the most precious gift of all, and donors share theirs with patients, in a unique way, by donating a bit of their blood and their time."

The province's blood supply belongs to all Quebeckers. Keep in mind that at least 1,000 blood donations are required every day to meet the needs of our hospitals' patients. Any healthy person 18 years of age and older meeting Héma-Québec's eligibility criteria can give blood every 56 days, which is 6 times per year.

You can give blood at blood drives and GLOBULE blood donor centres located at Place Versailles, Place Laurier and Héma-Québec's facilities in Saint-Laurent. For the location of blood drives and GLOBULE blood donor centres, as well as blood donation eligibility criteria, please visit Héma-Québec's Web site at www.hema-quebec.qc.ca or call 1 800 847-2525.

Since it was founded in September 1998, Héma-Québec has welcomed more than 1,800,000 blood donors at 12,000 blood drives organized in co-operation with community partners throughout Québec. On average, Héma-Québec delivers some 400,000 blood products to hospitals each year in order to meet patients' needs.

Héma-Québec's mission is to efficiently provide adequate quantities of safe, optimal blood components, substitutes and human tissues to meet the needs of all Quebeckers; and to provide and develop expertise and services, along with specialized and innovative products, in the fields of transfusion medicine and human tissue transplantation.
