Héma-Québec releases its 2003–2004 Annual Report and Five-Year Summary

Montréal, August 6, 2004 - After its first five years of existence, Héma-Québec is proud to release a summary of its major accomplishments, including its 2003–2004 annual report. The continuous development and rapid growth of the organization have enabled it to become an acknowledged model in the blood product supply system.

Once again in 2003–2004, Héma-Québec was able to completely meet hospitals' needs, thanks to the almost 320,000 donors, including 25,000 first-time donors, who participated in the some 3,200 blood drives held throughout Québec. All donations were analysed and processed in order to provide some 400,000 perishable blood components, including packed red blood cells, platelets, plasma products and cryoprecipitate.

" The purpose of this report is to show Quebeckers how our operations have progressed year after year. Every day, Héma-Québec strives to efficiently provide a sufficient and safe supply of its products in order to meet the substantial needs of Québec hospitals and their patients. Héma-Québec could not fulfill its mission without its donors, community partners and staff members," stated Dr. Francine Décary, the organization's Chief Executive Officer.

Héma-Québec counts on the participation of more than 25,000 volunteers, 1,500 blood drive organizing committees, thousands of blood donors and 1,300 employees to deliver blood products to patients at 88 hospitals around Québec.

The Annual Report is available in the Publications section of the Héma-Québec Web site at www.hema-quebec.qc.ca.

Created in September 1998, Héma-Québec's mission is to efficiently provide adequate quantities of safe, optimal blood components, substitutes and human tissues to meet the needs of all Quebeckers; and to provide and develop expertise and services, along with specialized and innovative products, in the fields of transfusion medicine and human tissue transplantation.
