“GO SHORT-SLEEVED THIS SUMMER.”

Héma-Québec launches its major summer campaign and recognizes World Blood Donor Day

Montréal, June 11, 2006 – Why go short-sleeved? To always be ready to give blood and help save a life—or several lives. This is the sunny theme for Héma-Québec’s 2006 summer campaign, which runs from June 12 to September 10, and aims to encourage Quebecers to give blood, even in the summer and during their vacation.

In the coming months, Héma-Québec will visit all Québec regions to meet up with vacationers to make it easier for them to donate blood. GLOBULE Blood Donor Centres, located at Place Versailles and 4045 Côte-Vertu Blvd., Saint-Laurent, as well as Place Laurier in Québec City, will welcome donors throughout the summer. A Mobile Blood Donation Unit will tour campsites and shopping centres in Québec. “Donating blood has never been as easy or as safe,” stated Dr. Francine Décary, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma-Québec. “This is clearly recognized by Quebecers, who regularly contribute to maintaining the supply at optimal levels, and thus ensuring the quality and availability of the necessary products to meet patients’ needs.”

In Québec, someone needs blood every 80 seconds. To deal with this situation, 1,000 donations a day are needed! This task is shared among Héma-Québec, the community, donors, volunteers and partners. Summer is always a good time to remind donors that patients are relying on them, even during vacation.

Several celebrities are involved in Héma-Québec’s summer campaign: Actress Hélène Bourgeois-Leclerc, hockey player Stéphane Quintal and singer Mélanie Renaud have agreed to support this blood donation awareness campaign. You will see them on posters proudly wearing red T-shirts with an unusual design: two different sleeves - one long and one short. The left sleeve, which is short, refers to the act of giving blood—an original way to represent and identify donors.

Roll up your sleeves on June 14!
Héma-Québec is also marking the third edition of World Blood Donor Day on June 14 with a program of activities and the publication of a special information booklet on the act of donating blood. Héma-Québec uses this event, which is recognized in more than 80 countries, to thank the Québec population for its generosity and altruism, as giving blood is a voluntary unpaid gesture. It is also an opportunity to encourage people to become donors. By knowing that a single donation can help save up to four lives, we understand that giving blood is giving life.
