This summer, go short-sleeved! Héma-Québec would like to remind that the need for blood doesn’t stop for summer vacation

Montréal, July 14, 2008 - As part of the Go short-sleeved this summer campaign launched on June 16, Héma-Québec is calling on everyone’s generosity to maintain the province’s blood reserve at sufficient levels, even during the summer vacation season.

Despite the arrival of summer, every 80 seconds someone needs blood. Anyone who is at least 18 years old and in good health can donate blood once every 56 days, which is 6 times per year. Eligibility for blood donation can be verified by calling
1-800-847-2525 or by consulting the Blood Donation section on Héma-Québec’s website at www.hema-quebec.qc.ca.

Donors can save as many as four lives just by spending an hour or so lying back on one of Héma-Québec’s comfortable chair. This summer, the population is invited to add blood donation to their to-do lists to ensure that patients have access to sufficient quantities of blood products. To this end, Héma-Québec will be reaching out to vacationers at many campsites. Those seeking out airconditioned spaces will have an opportunity to help save lives in many shopping malls around the province.

To find out the locations of blood drives, donors may call 1-800-343-7264 or visit the Blood Drives section on Héma-Québec’s website. They can also visit one of the globule Blood Donor Centres at Place Versailles or 4045 CôteVertu Blvd. in Montreal, or Place Laurier Québec in SainteFoy.

There is no risk of contracting an illness through giving blood, as all material used is new, sterile, sealed and used only once. Before being delivered to hospitals, every blood donation is systematically analyzed and screened for blood-borne infections.
