Globule and New internal facility

Montréal, 27 January 2013

Héma Québec announces the opening of a first GLOBULE Blood Donor Centre on the South Shore of Montréal at the end of 2013. Together with this new establishment will be the opening of another Héma-Québec operational support facility in Brossard in the coming months.

GLOBULE Blood Donor Centre

The opening of a new GLOBULE Blood Donor Centre will help to better meet Québec hospitals’ growing demand for platelet products, which has been rising by 6% annually over the past five years. Héma-Québec expects this growth to remain steady over the coming years.

The South Shore was chosen based on the findings of a market study conducted in summer 2012. The Montérégie is a nerve centre for Héma-Québec, with a large pool of donors and volunteers. Last year, more than 34% of donations collected by the Héma-Québec facility in Montréal came from donors in this region.

The exact location of this new centre has not yet been determined. As is the case with the other GLOBULE centres, Héma-Québec will favour a high-traffic, easily accessible commercial zone.

New operational facility in Brossard

Héma-Québec will also open a new facility for Héma-Québec’s internal operations in the spring. This point of service will serve primarily as a departure site for blood drive personnel. It will also be a storage site for the equipment needed for blood drives. This decision is justified by a significant reduction in the travel time to blood drives, due to recurring traffic congestion issues on the island of Montréal. At the present time, more than a third of all blood drives organized in the Greater Montréal Area are held in the Montérégie.

The chosen location is close to major arteries, namely autoroutes 10 and 30 and route 132.

About GLOBULE Blood Donor Centres

GLOBULE Blood Donor Centres reach a larger pool of donors and have the particular advantage of enabling certain types of donations, namely platelet donations, that are not offered through mobile blood drives. The fact that they are easy to access and open 7 days a week, as well as the possibility of making an appointment for a blood donation are other reasons why GLOBULE centres provide a positive and pleasant blood donation experience.

The Globule concept is, of course, complementary to mobile drives, which represent 86% of blood drives organized annually. Three other GLOBULE Blood Donor Centres receive donors, one at Place Versailles shopping centre in Montréal, one at Centre Laval on the North Shore of Montréal and one at Laurier Québec shopping centre in the borough of Sainte-Foy in Québec City.
