Montréal Canadiens’ Blood Drive – Call for Blood Donations

Montréal, October 18, 2022 – Héma-Québec is issuing a call for blood donors to come to the 41st edition of the Montréal Canadiens’ Blood Drive tomorrow, October 19, as well as to the various other blood drives across Québec.

The troubling state of the blood supply requires a great mobilization of people who are able to donate. The situation around the blood supply in Québec is prompting this call, in the context of the eighth pandemic wave and the increased demand from hospitals for the O+ and O- blood types.

Unfortunately, the situation in Quebec is no exception to the overall context of tremendous pressure on blood banks around the world. In fact, Great Britain issued an Amber alert last week because of supplies being at a critical level. The same is true in France and the United States. With vigilance being needed in Québec, the performance of the Montréal Canadiens’ drive and the blood drives across Québec in the coming weeks are essential. Donors need to be at these important, life-saving events.

Activities are continuing despite the one-day strike by Montreal nurses

Further to a decision by the Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT) on October 14, the nursing staff at the Montréal Canadiens’ Blood Drive will be required to work as usual, despite the one-day strike by members of the Syndicat du personnel infirmières d’Héma-Québec (SPI-CSQ). The only exclusion to their contribution to the Canadiens’ blood drive will be limited to performing certain tasks associated with setting up and tearing down the drive, at times when people making donations will be absent.

Héma-Québec would like emphasize that it is making every effort to reach a negotiated agreement. To date, the parties have met 34 times. Note that 18 of those meetings were held in the presence of a conciliation officer appointed by the Ministry of Labour. Héma-Québec reminds everyone that all planned blood drives are going ahead as essential services, and that 1,000 donations are required every day to meet the hospitals’ needs.
