Héma-Québec reminds everyone of the importance of declaring your consent to organ and tissue donation

Montreal, April 20, 2009 – As part of National Organ and Tissue Donation week from April 19 26, 2009, Héma-Québec is joining the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, Quebec-Transplant and the Chambre des notaires in their efforts to encourage all Quebec citizens to notify loved ones of their desire to donate their organs and tissues upon death.

“During national organ and tissue donation week, take a moment to explain to your loved ones why organ and tissue donation is important to you and that you wish to donate your organs when you die. This gesture can make a world of difference. Each year, thousands of adults and children await tissue or corneal grafts in order to survive or improve their quality of life,” stated Dr. Francine Décary, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma-Québec.

Indicating your desire to donate your organs and tissues upon death requires only a few simple gestures. In addition to notifying loved ones, potential donors need to sign the consent sticker and affix it to the back of their health insurance card; they can also register with the Registre des consentements au don d'organes et de tissus of the Chambre des notaires du Québec (www.cdnq.org).

As a supplier of blood products, Héma-Québec collects and treats human tissues, including bone grafts and heart valves, and distributes them to Quebec’s hospitals. Moreover, since May 2008, pursuant to a partnership agreement with the Banque d’Yeux du Québec, Héma Québec has been collecting and treating human eyes for use in corneal grafts.

Following the example for blood products, Héma-Québec applies the highest standards to ensure patients have access to safe products.
