Consent to Organ and Tissue Donation–Now is the Time to Act

Québec City, April 23, 2018–Héma-Québec is teaming up with Transplant Québec and the Régie de l’assurance maladie during National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, April 22 to 28, to invite everyone who supports the cause to indicate his or her donor consent.

To date, nearly three million Quebecers have indicated their consent. Despite these encouraging results, work remains to be done: although the majority of the population is supportive of organ and tissue donation, fewer than half of Quebecers have taken the necessary steps to ensure that their wishes are respected when the time comes.

The campaign is running in newspapers and online and features recipients whose lives have been transformed by an organ or tissue donation. The aim is to encourage everyone who wishes to consent to tissue and organ donation to act now by visiting the Web site www.signezdon.gouv.qc.ca and indicating their consent.

Human Tissue Donation: the Legacy of Life

Without the generosity of those who accept to make this type of donation after death and without the agreement of the donor’s loved ones to respect this choice, it would be impossible to meet the needs of patients or accident victims who require a transplant. This ultimate gift can improve the life of 20 persons.

Raising Awareness among Healthcare Workers

During the past year, Héma-Québec has intensified its awareness-raising activities among its healthcare partners to encourage that the recommendation of potential donors for the human tissue bank of Québec is done in a systematic manner.

Between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018, Héma-Québec received 5,463 recommendations of potential donors, an increase of 44% over last year. These recommendations are vital to ensure greater sufficiency and have enabled the organization to distribute more than 5,500 human tissues to Québec hospitals in the past year.
