Regional Strike by a Héma-Québec Union – Blood Collections Still Taking Place

Montreal, September 27, 2022 — Héma-Québec is asking blood donors to keep their appointments at various collection sites in the Greater Montreal area on September 27 and 28, 2022, during the two days of a local strike by a Héma-Québec union.

An essential services agreement between Héma-Québec and the Syndicat du personnel infirmier d’Héma-Québec (CSQ-SPI) provides for the ongoing operation of all blood donor clinics in the greater Montreal area.

Héma-Québec committed to reaching an agreement

Héma-Québec is determined to reach an agreement with this union, as it has done with seven other unions since last spring.

“The Union’s claims are surprising and do not hold up to the facts. Employer representatives were available throughout the summer. In fact, it was the union that requested the bargaining meetings be postponed to mid-September. Talks have been ongoing at the negotiating table in recent days,” says Roselyne Zombecki, Vice-President, People, Culture and Leadership. “Quality of work life is at the heart of the current negotiations. A proposal to improve how work is organized was tabled at the negotiating table in the spring of 2022. The overall monetary offer was finally made to the Syndicat du personnel infirmier d’Héma-Québec (CSQ-SPI) and is consistent with the salary relativity plan that was agreed to with seven other unions at Héma-Québec."

1,000 donations per day

It must be remembered that 1,000 donations a day are needed to meet hospital needs. The organization wants to remind everyone of its vital and essential mission to provide a sufficient quality and quantity of blood products to Québec patients. With this in mind, it is important that blood drives be fully accessible to blood donors, in accordance with the terms and conditions for essential services, the interruption of which could jeopardize the health or safety of Quebeckers. Héma-Québec has taken all measures to avoid any negative impact on the collective blood supply, which could put the lives of recipients at risk.
