Procedure for palliative care donor referrals

In your professional practice, you provide patients with invaluable end-of-life care, ensuring they receive continuous support in care facilities or at home. Héma-Québec knows just how valuable your day-to-day work is and wants you to know how much of a difference tissue donation could make for your patients and their families.

Although tissue donation is generally brought up with the family after their loved one passes, patients occasionally express a wish to become tissue donors while still alive. Whatever the case may be, healthcare professionals can contact a Héma-Québec coordinator, who will provide all the necessary information.

Human tissue donation occurs after confirmation that the potential donor (aged 0 to 85) has passed and does not meet any of the exclusion criteria.

The Héma-Québec coordinator will check consent registries at the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and the Chambre des notaires du Québec (CNQ) and call hospital staff to inform them of the patient’s consent (or lack thereof) and next steps.

Human tissue donation can be of the utmost importance to families and loved ones, offering them a way to honour the donor's wishes and contribute to the donor’s legacy after death.
