    Dr. Francine Décary, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma-Québec, and
    Mr. Paul L’Archevêque, President and CEO of Génome Québec, today announced the creation at Héma-Québec of a permanent database of 22,000 donors genotyped for several blood groups in order to facilitate secure transfusions for patients in Québec. This database will help in locating compatible blood more easily for patients in need of a transfusion of a specific blood profile.

  • Inauguration at the MUHC: The MUHC Clinical Research Cord Blood Bank is born!

    The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is proud to inaugurate today its new Clinical Research Cord Blood Bank, which represents both the end result of an important project and the starting point for future research. This new comprehensive tool will be used to collect and store umbilical cord blood which do not meet the collection standards of the bank managed by Héma-Québec. These cord blood samples will be used exclusively for research projects on stem cells. Ms. Linda Peltier will be responsible for the administrative management of the Cord Blood Bank, while Dr. Pierre Laneuville will act as medical director for the laboratory. Dr. Richard Brown will oversee the obstetrics component of the project and Dr. Ahmed Galal will act as director of stem cell transplants.

    Héma-Québec has passed annual inspection at its Québec facilities. Consequently, inspectors of Health Canada maintained Héma-Québec's operating licence. The yearly procedural audit took place March 19-23, 2007.

    Launched on June 18, the Héma-Québec’s summer campaign « This summer, go short-sleeved. Give blood. Give life » goes on. With the construction holiday just around the corner, Héma-Québec is calling on Quebecers to keep up their generosity and donate at blood drives. Summer is the ideal time to make this heroic and free deed of giving blood. At this time of the year, when leaving aside daily chores is so replenishing, donors are invited to blood drive locations to rest comfortably on “reclining chairs.” Since patients rely on us all year long, keeping the collective blood supply at an optimal level depends on the generosity of all Quebecers… even during summer vacation.

    For several years now, Héma-Québec has taken advantage of World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14, to thank blood donors for their show of solidarity with patients in need of blood products. The theme this year is “Safe Blood for Safe Motherhood.” Organized by Héma-Québec in collaboration with Health Canada and Canadian Blood Services, the event aims to highlight how voluntary blood donors can help save the lives of thousands of mothers and newborns around the world.

    As part of National Volunteer Week that runs from April 15–21, Héma-Québec would like to remind the public that volunteer action is essential for maintaining Québec’s blood supply. In addition to the 320,000 individuals who voluntarily give blood every year, Héma-Québec relies on the generous contribution of a network of tens of thousands of people, throughout Québec, who support its endeavours by recruiting donors, organizing blood drives or volunteering their services at the blood donor clinics.

  • Canada to host World Blood Donor Day June 14, 2007

    Canada has been selected as the host country for World Blood Donor Day on June 14th, 2007 by the World Health Organization, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, International Society of Blood Transfusion and International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations. Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec will work in conjunction with Health Canada to thank blood donors around the world for their selfless gift, and to raise awareness for the universal need for safe blood and blood products.

    During Héma-Québec's holiday campaign that took place from December 4, 2006 to January 7, 2007 under the theme “Share a unique gift. Give blood. Give life.” some 150 blood drives were organized with hundreds of volunteers from various community partners, throughout Québec. Donors turned out in force, enabling Héma-Québec to maintain the blood reserve at very high levels. Québec’s blood supplier announces that more than 26,000 people have given the gift of life.
